When the Red Dot fails and trigalight keeps you on target
Reflex sights, also known as Red Dot sights, have become increasingly popular on the market in recent years. In a Red Dot sight, a dot typically in red color is generated using an LED and electronic components and projected onto a semi-transparent, mirrored lens.
To acquire the target, the user simply needs to align this dot with the target. Their use in tactical and professional settings shares a fundamental weakness: They rely on a stable power supply and mechanical integrity. A dead battery, a hard impact, or a failure caused by vibration can render a Red Dot sight inoperable in a fraction of a second. If this happens in a critical situation, the shooter needs a backup option immediately. Ideally, one that is already in place before the failure occurs. The trigalight Red Dot backup solutions have been developed to close exactly this gap.
One Key Technology – Two Integration Methods
A trigalight consists of a glass body that is coated on the inside and filled with the active gas tritium. As tritium decays, electrons are released, which continuously excite the phosphor coating, thereby producing a uniform light. No external power source or switch is required—the light remains visible for decades thanks to this unique self-powered illumination technology.
Frame
In the frame solution, the trigalight is integrated directly into the red-dot housing. One or more trigalights indicate the optical axes and thus the reticle. The intersection is aligned with the center, making it easier to locate it – less dot hunting as a result. This passive sighting system requires no additional components besides the trigalight and is ideal for enclosed emitter. The shooter can immediately focus on the trigalight aiming marks without the need to mount, flip, or adjust anything
Cover
This solution, patented by mb-microtec, features removable flip-up protective cover for the open sight. The trigalight elements are positioned so precisely within the transparent covers that a glowing crosshair appears at the center. The shooter can switch between the Red Dot and the backup system at any time. Manufacturers can offer this solution as a feature of their protective cover accessories, compatible with their existing housing architecture.
Integration as a Means of Product Differentiation
Red dot manufacturers compete and differentiate themselves, for example, through price, geometry, mounting options, reticle design, or reliability promises. Trigalight Red Dot backup solutions offer a way to reinforce the reliability. The high stresses caused by acceleration and vibration during firearm use have a negative impact on the optics, electronics, and battery. For several decades, trigalight has proven itself in this very field as a night sight for military and police applications. trigalight and its backup solutions require no activation, do not discharge, and do not need to have their batteries replaced before use. They offer an independent and redundant system that complements Red Dot technology and provides added value for the user.
